Alternative Licensure Options
There are two alternative licensure options:
Licensure Only
This route is available for those individuals who have completed a four-year degree but did not meet the necessary requirements to obtain a teaching license while there. The individual requests that a college or university, such as Appalachian State University, do an analysis to determine what requirements the individual must meet before being recommended for licensure. Lateral Entry
When a school district hires an individual with a degree from a four-year institution who does not have a teaching license, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) issues a Provisional License and the individual becomes a "Lateral Entry" teacher. The Lateral Entry teacher must then meet the obligations of a full-time teacher while completing the requirements for a Standard Professional I license. Learn more about the Lateral Entry option
